- What to Include in a Mobile Office Van as a Digital Nomad
I'll be honest—when I first started thinking about working from a van, I imagined myself parked at scenic overlooks, laptop balanced on my knees, living the dream. Reality hit pretty fast. Working from a vehicle isn't just about having a laptop and good vibes. You need an actual functional workspace that doesn't leave you with a sore back and a dead battery by noon. If you're serious about making the digital nomad van life work, here's what you actually need to set up a mobile office that won't drive you crazy. I’ll break down everything you need to create a reliable and comfortable mobile office setup inside your van. From solar power systems and internet connectivity to ergonomic layouts, climate control, and tech storage, you’ll learn how to stay productive wherever you park. In This Post... ● The Power Essentials ● Internet Connectivity Setup ● Workspace Ergonomics ● Climate Control See More... ● Tech and Equipment Storage ● The Often-Overlooked Extras ● Making It Work for You ● Travel Resources The Power Essentials Let me start with the most critical part: power. You can have the fanciest van conversion in the world, but if your laptop dies mid-meeting, none of it matters. This is where you absolutely cannot cut corners. Your power system needs to include: ● Solar panel system (300W minimum recommended, more if you run power-hungry equipment) ● Lithium battery bank (200 Ah or higher—trust me, get more capacity than you think you need) ● Pure sine wave inverter (cheap modified sine wave inverters can damage your electronics) ● Multiple USB and AC outlets strategically placed around your workspace I learned this the hard way after trying to skimp on my initial setup. Watching your battery percentage drop while you're on a deadline is not the kind of adventure you want. A well-designed system, like what you'll find in Brooklyn Campervan features , takes the guesswork out of power management. And always keep a couple of high-capacity portable chargers as backup. You'll use them more than you expect. Internet Connectivity Setup Here's the truth about the internet on the road: you need redundancy. One connection method isn't enough. I typically run with at least three options at any given time. Start with a solid mobile hotspot device on a reliable carrier . Then add a cellular booster to amplify weak signals when you're in more remote areas. If you're staying at campgrounds or RV parks, a WiFi extender helps you catch those distant signals. For people who venture really off-grid, satellite internet has become more accessible, though it's still pricey. But let's be real—sometimes none of this works, and you'll need to scout out the nearest coffee shop or library. That's just part of the lifestyle, and honestly, it keeps you connected to local communities. Speaking of the remote work lifestyle, if you're looking for more insights on making location-independent work sustainable, Closer Lives has some solid perspectives on building routines that actually stick. Workspace Ergonomics This is where a lot of people mess up. They think they can just sit on their bed with a laptop and call it a workspace. Your body will revolt after about three days of that. You need a dedicated desk or table surface that's at a comfortable height. If you can swing it, get a proper office chair or at least a seat with lumbar support. I know space is limited, but your spine doesn't care about square footage. An external monitor makes a massive difference, too—working on a small laptop screen all day is a recipe for eye strain and headaches. Consider lighting carefully. Natural light is great, but you need task lighting for early mornings and evenings. LED strips with adjustable brightness work well and don't drain your battery. And make sure your essentials are within easy reach. Having to dig through cabinets every time you need something gets old fast. Your neck shouldn't feel like you've been in a wrestling match after a Zoom call. Climate Control Temperature control isn't just about comfort—it's about being able to work productively. I've tried working in a van that felt like an oven in summer and an icebox in winter. It's miserable, and your concentration goes out the window. Ventilation fans are non-negotiable. They pull hot air out and create airflow even when it's sweltering outside. Good insulation matters more than most people realize—it keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. You'll also want some kind of portable heating and cooling solution. There are battery-powered options now that work surprisingly well without destroying your power supply. Window covers serve double duty: they help regulate temperature and give you privacy for video calls. I use reflective covers in summer and insulated ones in winter. For more detailed information on keeping your van comfortable year-round, this guide on van insulation covers different materials and methods depending on your climate. Tech and Equipment Storage You're carrying expensive equipment down bumpy roads. That gear needs protection and organization. Invest in padded storage solutions for laptops, cameras, hard drives, and other electronics. Everything should have a secure spot where it won't rattle around when you're driving. I use a combination of foam-lined cases and custom shelving with lips to keep things from sliding off. Cable management is surprisingly important. Get some Velcro ties, cable organizers, or even just labeled Ziploc bags. Keep charging cables, adapters, and dongles sorted by device. Nothing kills productivity faster than untangling cables for 20 minutes before you can start work. Back up your data religiously—both to external drives and the cloud. Road life has more variables than a stationary office, and you don't want to lose everything because of one mishap. The Often-Overlooked Extras Some things don't seem critical until you need them. Privacy curtains or blinds are essential for video calls—nobody needs to see your entire van setup on camera. They also help you focus when you're parked in busy areas. Good noise-canceling headphones are worth their weight in gold. Background noise happens: other campers, traffic, and birds having territorial disputes at 6 am. Block it out. Consider keeping a backup laptop or at least a tablet that can handle basic work tasks. If your main computer decides to quit, you'll still have options. Depending on your work, a portable printer or scanner might be necessary. They make compact models now that don't take up much space. Don't forget the boring but essential stuff: a basic tool kit for van maintenance, first aid supplies, and comfort items that make your space feel less like a vehicle and more like a workspace. Making It Work for You At the end of the day, your mobile office needs to match your actual work requirements, not some idealized Instagram version of van life. Start with the essentials—power, internet, and a decent workspace. Build from there as you figure out what you actually use versus what sounded good in theory. The goal isn't just to survive working from a van. It's to create a setup where you can do your best work while having the freedom to move around. When you get it right, the mobile office becomes less about compromise and more about possibility. You're not sacrificing comfort for freedom—you're designing a workspace that travels with you. - Ocean Therapy: Why Boat Trips Hit Different
The ocean has always been more than just a body of water; it’s a place where time slows down and clarity returns. Step onto a boat, and the world on shore quickly fades, replaced by gentle waves, fresh air, and the rhythm of nature. This is what many call ocean therapy , a feeling that’s both grounding and uplifting, and one that lingers long after the boat docks. In this post , we’ll explore why boat trips feel so different and how they restore the mind, body, and spirit. Photo by Samuel Bryngelsson on Unsplash In This Post... ● The Healing Power of the Sea ● Disconnecting to Reconnect ● Physical Benefits of Boat Trips ● The Social Side of Ocean Therapy ● Adventure and Exploration See More... ● Why Boat Trips Feel Different ● FAQ: Ocean Therapy & Boat Trips ● Related & Useful Links ● Travel Resources The Healing Power of the Sea There’s something profoundly calming about the ocean. From the rhythmic sound of waves to the vast horizon that stretches endlessly, the sea has long been associated with peace and rejuvenation. Boat trips, in particular, offer a unique form of escape from the daily grind. Unlike a simple walk on the beach, being out on the water provides a more immersive experience, where the mind naturally slows down, and stress seems to dissolve with every ripple. Many people describe this as “ocean therapy,” a phenomenon where the combination of sea air, sunlight, and the gentle rocking of a boat creates a sense of harmony that can’t be replicated on land. Disconnecting to Reconnect ⪢ Leaving Distractions Behind On land, it’s nearly impossible to escape the constant pull of notifications, emails, and traffic noise. But once you’re out on a boat, all of that fades. The ocean forces you to disconnect from your devices and routines, creating space for genuine presence. This break from digital overload allows people to reconnect not just with nature but also with themselves. ⪢ A Mental Reset Studies have shown that water environments have a restorative effect on the brain. The sound of waves stimulates alpha brainwaves, which are associated with relaxation and creativity. This is why so many people find clarity and inspiration while on a boat trip. It’s not just a day out—it’s a reset button for mental well-being. Physical Benefits of Boat Trips ⪢ Fresh Air and Sunshine Spending time on a boat means soaking up vitamin D from the sun and breathing in salty, oxygen-rich air. Both have proven health benefits, including boosting mood and supporting immune function. The gentle movement of the boat also encourages better balance and activates core muscles without the intensity of a workout. ⪢ Stress Relief Through Activity For those who enjoy more active trips, boating often involves swimming, snorkeling, or even fishing. These activities provide low-impact exercise, which helps release endorphins—the body’s natural stress relievers. Whether you’re casting a line or diving into clear waters, the physical engagement only enhances the calming effect of the sea. The Social Side of Ocean Therapy ⪢ Strengthening Connections Boat trips often bring people together in a way that land-based activities rarely do. Being in close quarters encourages conversation, teamwork, and shared experiences. Whether it’s a family outing, a romantic escape, or a group of friends spending the day at sea, these moments often strengthen relationships. ⪢ Creating Lasting Memories Unlike a typical gathering at a café or park, a day spent on the ocean stands out. The laughter, the shared silence while watching the sunset, or the excitement of spotting dolphins—all become cherished memories. This sense of adventure and togetherness adds another layer to the therapeutic effect of boating. Photo by Logan Weaver | @LGNWVR on Unsplash Adventure and Exploration ⪢ A Different Perspective Being on a boat changes the way you see the world. Cities and coastlines look entirely different from the water, and exploring hidden coves or remote islands opens up a sense of wonder. This shift in perspective often reminds people of how vast and beautiful the planet truly is, sparking gratitude and awe. ⪢ The Joy of Fishing Fishing is one of the most popular activities during boat trips, blending relaxation with excitement. Waiting for a catch teaches patience, while the thrill of reeling one in brings a rush of adrenaline. It’s also a chance to bond with others and enjoy the simplicity of being present in nature. For those who love angling, having the right fishing accessories on board makes the experience even more enjoyable, ensuring comfort and efficiency out at sea. Why Boat Trips Feel Different ⪢ Immersion in Nature The ocean engages all the senses—the smell of salt air, the feel of sea spray, the sight of endless blue, the sound of gulls and waves, and even the taste of fresh seafood. This multi-sensory immersion creates a deeper connection with nature compared to other outdoor activities. ⪢ A Break From Routine Perhaps the most powerful reason boat trips hit different is the break they provide from routine. Life on land is structured and predictable, but life at sea is fluid and spontaneous. You might spot a pod of dolphins, anchor at a secluded beach, or simply drift while watching the horizon. This unpredictability makes each trip feel like a true adventure. FAQ: Ocean Therapy & Boat Trips What is “ocean therapy”? Ocean therapy is the calming effect of being out at sea. The combination of salty air, gentle waves, and open horizons helps reduce stress, clear the mind, and promote relaxation. Many describe it as a natural reset that cannot be replicated on land. Are boat trips good for stress relief? Yes. Studies show that water environments stimulate alpha brainwaves, which are linked to relaxation and creativity. Being on a boat removes daily distractions, making it easier to slow down, release stress, and reconnect with yourself. Do boat trips have physical health benefits? Absolutely. Time on the water means soaking up vitamin D, breathing fresh ocean air, and engaging your muscles as the boat moves. Activities like swimming, snorkeling, or fishing add gentle exercise that boosts overall well-being. Can children and families benefit from ocean therapy? Yes. Boat trips often bring people together in ways land activities cannot. Families can bond through shared experiences, whether spotting dolphins, fishing, or simply enjoying the quiet togetherness of the sea. What should I bring on a boat trip to make it more comfortable? It’s best to pack light but wisely. Essentials include sunscreen, water, snacks, a hat, and any personal items for comfort. If fishing, having the right fishing accessories ensures a smoother and more enjoyable experience. - Passport Stamps Before Presents: Why Experiences Make the Best Gifts
In a world overflowing with material possessions, a growing movement is embracing the idea of gifting experiences over physical objects. More people are realizing that memories outlast any gadget, piece of jewelry, or trendy clothing item. Instead of another sweater that might be forgotten in the depths of a closet, why not give the gift of a breathtaking adventure, an exhilarating car road trip, or a tranquil getaway? Experiences tap into something far more profound than material gifts—they bring lasting joy, foster personal growth, and create stories that can be treasured for a lifetime. Whether it’s a concert ticket, a travel voucher, or a hands-on cooking class, experiential gifts have the unique power to create unforgettable moments. In This Post... ● Science of Experiential Happiness ● Why Travel is the Ultimate Gift ● Rise of Experience-Based Gifting ● The Emotional Impact ● Lifestyle Resources The Science Behind Experiential Happiness Photo by Kit (formerly ConvertKit) Psychological research consistently shows that experiences contribute more to long-term happiness than material possessions. A study conducted by Dr. Thomas Gilovich at Cornell University found that while people experience initial excitement when acquiring new items, that excitement diminishes over time as they grow accustomed to them. Conversely, experiences continue to bring happiness because they become a part of our identity and strengthen social connections. ● Personal Growth : Experiences encourage self-discovery and expand one’s perspective. ● Stronger Relationships : Shared experiences deepen emotional bonds and create meaningful connections. ● Enduring Memories : Unlike material objects, experiences evolve into cherished stories that can be revisited and relived. This is why adventure trips, art workshops, and music festivals offer far more lasting joy than the latest tech gadget or designer accessory. Why Travel is the Ultimate Gift Among all possible experiences, travel stands out as one of the most transformative gifts. Whether it’s a surprise weekend getaway or a grand international adventure, travel introduces new cultures, broadens perspectives, and fosters personal evolution. A Car Road Trip to Remember For those who love the freedom of the open road, a car road trip makes for an extraordinary gift. Road trips offer the perfect blend of adventure and spontaneity, where the journey itself is just as rewarding as the destination. Here’s why a well-planned road trip is a gift that keeps on giving: ● Customizable & Flexible : Unlike prearranged vacations, road trips allow travelers to set their own pace, explore hidden gems, and curate an itinerary tailored to their interests. ● Unforgettable Scenic Routes : From winding coastal highways to breathtaking mountain passes, the landscapes along the way enhance the adventure. ● Quality Bonding Time : Road trips create opportunities for deep conversations, unexpected laughter, and spontaneous detours that lead to unforgettable memories. Imagine surprising a loved one with a weekend drive along the Pacific Coast Highway or a scenic autumn road trip through New England’s golden foliage. It’s a gift that blends excitement, relaxation, and exploration into one unforgettable experience. Cultural and Culinary Adventures For those with a passion for food and culture, immersive experiences such as cooking classes in different cities or countries can be incredibly rewarding. Picture learning the art of fresh pasta making in Italy or mastering the delicate techniques of sushi preparation in Japan . These experiences not only provide an exhilarating sense of discovery but also impart skills that last a lifetime. Similarly, cultural experiences—whether visiting ancient ruins, exploring world-renowned museums, or attending vibrant local festivals—offer an in-depth appreciation of history, tradition, and artistry that no physical item can replicate. The Rise of Experience-Based Gifting In recent years, experience-based gifting has gained momentum as people seek meaningful ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Instead of traditional wrapped presents, more individuals are turning to gifts that create lasting memories, such as ● Concert & Theater Tickets – A night at a favorite artist’s concert or an immersive Broadway show can provide moments of pure joy and excitement. ● Outdoor Adventures – Thrill-seekers will appreciate activities like skydiving, scuba diving, or hot air balloon rides. ● Subscription-Based Experiences – From gourmet meal deliveries to adventure kits and travel memberships, these ongoing experiences extend the joy far beyond a single day. The mindset is shifting from “what can I buy?” to “what can I experience?” - an approach that enriches life rather than adding clutter. The Emotional Impact of Giving Experiences Photo by Nubia Navarro (nubikini) One of the most rewarding aspects of gifting experiences is the emotional depth they cultivate. Unlike material items, which may lose significance over time, experiences generate moments of joy, anticipation, and heartfelt gratitude. ● Encouraging Quality Time – Shared experiences bring loved ones together in ways that physical gifts never can. ● Demonstrating Thoughtfulness – A carefully selected experience reflects deep consideration and understanding of what truly matters to the recipient. ● Reducing Clutter & Waste – Opting for an experience instead of a physical item contributes to a minimalist lifestyle while supporting sustainability. ⪢ The Gift That Keeps Giving A simple car road trip can spark a lifelong passion for travel. A spontaneous surfing lesson may ignite an enduring love for the ocean. A single art workshop can inspire a lifetime of creativity. Experiences aren’t just fleeting moments—they often serve as gateways to new passions and interests. By choosing to give experiences over material objects, we offer our loved ones something infinitely more valuable: the thrill of adventure, the joy of discovery, and memories that will be cherished forever. ⪢ Experiences Strengthen Relationships Experiential gifts aren’t just about the adventure itself—they’re about sharing moments that strengthen relationships. Whether it’s a spontaneous car road trip with a best friend, a surprise weekend retreat with a partner, or a family getaway, these experiences create opportunities for deeper connections. Traveling together fosters teamwork, patience, and mutual appreciation, strengthening relationships in a way that material gifts never could. ⪢ The Lasting Value of Stories Over Stuff Material possessions may lose their appeal over time, but the stories crafted through experiences endure. Few people look back fondly on the day they received another gadget, but they will always remember the night they camped beneath the stars, the moment they witnessed the northern lights for the first time, or the exhilaration of navigating a road trip through a stunning mountain range. Experiential gifts become the stories that people tell for years, reinforcing the idea that life’s richness is measured in moments, not things. ⪢ Making Experiences More Accessible Some people hesitate to give experiences as gifts, assuming they must be extravagant or costly. However, remarkable experiences don’t require an extravagant budget. A well-planned car road trip, a thoughtfully arranged picnic in a scenic location, or an at-home movie night with themed snacks can be just as meaningful as a lavish vacation. The key is thoughtfulness—curating experiences that are personal, memorable, and tailored to the recipient’s interests. Overall, Google Flights simplifies the process of finding and booking flights, making it a valuable tool for travelers seeking convenience and savings. ⪢ Why We Recommend Google Flights One of our favorite features of Google Flights is how easy it is to compare prices, in particular, being able to see prices on the date calendar 6 months in advance. We tend to use it to do our initial research and then go on to compare it with other booking sites that we use. It is super easy to navigate, and if you are like us and like to plan, it can help to make this process smoother and more manageable. 2. Booking.com Booking.com is a popular online platform that allows users to search and book accommodations, flights, rental cars, and other travel services worldwide. With a user-friendly interface and a wide range of options, Booking.com provides travelers with the convenience of finding and booking their desired travel arrangements quickly and easily. The platform also offers reviews, ratings, and helpful information to assist users in making informed decisions about their travel plans. Whether you're looking for a budget-friendly hostel or a luxury resort, Booking.com is a go-to website for all your travel booking needs. ⪢ Why We Recommend Booking.com You can usually find a host of last-minute deals on hotels on Booking.com , and it also has a ton of unique experiences, for example, staying the night in a docked cruise ship room. We particularly like its reward system, where you can go up levels, gain points, and get money, discounts, and perks. While this is not our exclusive travel site, it is one we use frequently when planning and booking our adventures. 3. Expedia Expedia is a global travel company that operates an online travel booking platform. It offers a wide range of services, including booking flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, vacation packages, and activities. Expedia provides travelers with a convenient way to plan and book their trips all in one place. The company aims to make travel planning easier and more accessible for people around the world. ⪢ Why We Recommend Expedia Tried and true, we have been using Expedia since before we started traveling full-time. It is generally our go-to website/app, as it offers a bit of everything. We love Expedia's reward scheme, which offers bonus points on cars, hotels, flights, and package deals. Plus, when you reach gold status like us, you can get first picks, amazing discounts, room upgrades, and often special treatment such as welcome drinks and late checkouts. Expedia also offers excellent customer service and is a long-standing, reputable company. SAVE CAD 30 when you spend CAD 230 Book your first trip with Expedia as a NEW USER, be it for a hotel, car rental, or flight, and get a $30 discount, no strings attached! 4. We highly recommend the safety and security that Airbnb offers, with protection for renters that you will not get with private rentals. We also enjoy the choice on offer and the fact that they offer substantial discounts for monthly bookings. ⪢ Pro Tip Be sure to use the refined search options, read the house rules, and check the about sections and cancellation policies, as they can vary. The platform also provides a range of travel services, such as virtual interlining, price alerts, and 24/7 customer support to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience for its customers. ⪢ Why We Recommend Kiwi.com Known for unique flight search features, Kiwi is a great follow-up to Google Flights. It is super easy to use and navigate, and more often than not, we find that Kiwi offers better prices on shorter flights, in particular. That being said, be aware that prices do bump up a little if you choose to opt in to insurance and upgrade options, which they do push fairly aggressively. If you are a budget traveler looking for the most affordable flight options, however, Kiwi is the place to be. 6. Grab / Bolt / Uber Car-sharing apps have revolutionized the way people commute, offering a convenient and efficient alternative to traditional transportation methods. Grab, Bolt, and Uber are three popular car-sharing apps that provide users with on-demand transportation services. Here is a brief overview of each: ⪢ Grab Grab is a Southeast Asian ride-hailing app that offers a wide range of services, including car rides, motorbike rides, and food delivery. It operates in several countries across Asia, providing users with a reliable and safe transportation option. Grab is known for its user-friendly interface, multiple payment options, and various promotional offers. ⪢ Bolt Bolt , formerly known as Taxify, is a European ride-hailing app that has expanded its services to other regions, including Africa and Australia. Bolt focuses on providing affordable transportation options with transparent pricing. The app is popular for its quick response times, professional drivers, and environmentally friendly initiatives, such as carbon offset programs. ⪢ Uber Uber is one of the pioneers of the ride-hailing industry and operates in numerous countries worldwide. Known for its extensive network of drivers, Uber offers a variety of services, including UberX, UberPool, and UberBlack. The app is recognized for its user customization options, real-time tracking features, and integration with public transportation services in some cities. ⪢ Why We Recommend Ride-Sharing Apps Whenever we land anywhere, pretty much our first go-to is any one of the above, depending on which is available. Often, you will find that local taxi services charge more, are less secure, and are less reliable. Using ride-sharing apps provides us with the safety and security that we can track where we are going, are covered by a major brand, and also are driven by licensed drivers. 7. Turo Turo is a peer-to-peer car rental company that allows car owners to rent out their vehicles to others. Founded in 2009, Turo provides a platform where users can list their cars for rent, setting their prices and availability. This gives renters a wide variety of vehicle options to choose from, ranging from economy cars to luxury vehicles. Turo offers a convenient and flexible alternative to traditional car rental services, allowing users to book cars for short-term use directly from local car owners. ⪢ Why We Recommend Turo Turo is a much more affordable option than traditional car rental companies, with a vast array of vehicle options. You can find luxury or economy vehicles, along with great meet-up/pick-up spot flexibility. Sometimes you can even pick up your ride without even having to see anyone! Another benefit is that with traditional car rental companies, you are not allowed to book a car for more than 30 days, whereas with Turo, you can rent for up to 6 months at a time. This is a game-changer if you are looking for long-term rentals and can save you money and time! Sign Up and Save Get 30% off your first private car hire booking with Turo with Closer Lives! 8. Klook Klook is a popular online platform that offers a wide range of travel activities, tours, and experiences for travelers around the world. With Klook, users can easily discover and book unique experiences such as sightseeing tours, attraction tickets, food tours, outdoor adventures, and more in various destinations. The platform provides convenient access to a diverse selection of activities, making it easier for travelers to plan and enhance their trips. Klook is known for its user-friendly interface, competitive prices, and reliable customer service, making it a go-to choice for travelers looking to explore and make the most of their travel experiences. ⪢ Why We Recommend Klook When it comes to booking activities and experiences, Klook has been a complete game-changer for us! While we are not typically big fans of tours in general, we do find that in many cases they are the only solid option to explore places, such as Korea's DMZ or Thailand's islands. Klook offers safety, security, and efficiency, giving us peace of mind that not only will everything be organized, but that we have excellent customer service to fall back on if things do not work out. They help to eliminate language barriers, offer licensed and knowledgeable guides, and operate in pretty much every country we have visited. They do offer plenty of other handy essentials, such as rentals, hotels, and even SIM cards, making them a valuable must-have travel tool. SAVE On Your First Booking Get 5% off your first booking on anything on the Klook app with our promo code: BetterOnApp. Plus, get 5% off your first hotel booking with our special promo code: HotelOnApp. 9. 12Go 12Go is a platform that provides online booking services for transportation and travel options across various countries. Whether you are looking to book flights, trains, buses, ferries, or other modes of transportation, 12Go offers a convenient way to compare schedules, prices, and availability all in one place. ⪢ Why We Recommend 12go While 12go specializes in Asia, they are rapidly expanding their reach across the globe and operate in over 12,000 destinations. With a super easy-to-use website, we are using 12go more and more to find the best flights and, in particular, intercity transport options for coaches, trains, and transfers. We like the ticketing system, which exclusively uses QR codes, and the members' area, which keeps track of all of our bookings. 10. Trusted Housesitters Trusted Housesitters is a platform that connects homeowners with trustworthy individuals who are willing to look after their homes and pets while they are away. Homeowners can find reliable house sitters to take care of their property, plants, and pets, providing peace of mind during their absence. House sitters, on the other hand, get the opportunity to stay in unique locations around the world for free in exchange for their services. Trusted Housesitters offers a safe and secure way for both parties to connect and build mutually beneficial relationships. ⪢ Why We Recommend Trusted Housesitters Trusted Housesitters is a great accommodation option, especially for countries such as Canada , the U.S., Australia , and the U.K. This is mainly because there are so many options available, and these are typically quite expensive countries to visit if you are looking for an Airbnb. It makes countries that seem out of reach more affordable, but do keep in mind that there is an annual sign-up fee, and it can be a challenge to align the dates and times to match what you are looking for. Sometimes the locations can be quite remote and may need a vehicle (which sometimes can be offered by homeowners). With the proper research and some good luck, this can be a way to make your monthly accommodation cost similar to the likes of South East Asia if you average out flight and food costs, given that there is no rent to pay. Most options do include pets, so this may be something to consider if you are not comfortable looking after animals. In This Post... ● Balian Beach, Indonesia ● Petra tou Romiou, Cyprus ● Langkawi, Malaysia ● Batumi, Georgia ● San Cristobal, Mexico See More... ● El Gouna, Egypt ● Gundogan , Türkiye ● Arundel, England ● Whitby, England ● Paris, France ● Isla de Pasion, Mexico ● Hoi An, Vietnam ● Singapore ● Chiang Rai, Thailand ● Niagara Falls, Canada ● Travel Resources 1. Balian Beach, Bali, Indonesia Balian Beach isn't your typical Bali hotspot. Tucked away on the west coast, roughly 2 hours northwest of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, it sits nestled between verdant rice paddies and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. You'll find it just north of the small village of Sangguling, at the mouth of the Balian River. This secluded location guarantees a more peaceful and intimate experience compared to the bustling south of Bali. Balian Beach is known as a surfer's paradise, where volcanic ash paints the sand black in places, and powerful waves serenade sun-kissed shores. Imagine hand-in-hand strolls along the secluded coast, watching surfers dance with the ocean before sharing intimate moments under starlit skies. That is what you get here in a spot that seems so quiet at night and tranquil during the day, but where you will always find a cool bar or throng of people in a restaurant. This hidden gem offers more than just waves, with nearby rice paddies whispering secrets and charming cafes tempting your taste buds. For a touch of adventure, you will find secluded waterfalls nestled amongst lush greenery and incredible bat caves on the beach. You can even indulge in yoga retreats that reconnect you with nature and each other. Indonesia's Balian Beach is a romantic haven for adventure-loving couples seeking serenity, beauty, and a unique touch of Bali magic, but without all of the tourist kerfuffle! Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock), Paphos, Cyprus Steeped in legend and bathed in Mediterranean sunshine, Aphrodite's Rock in Cyprus promises a love story come to life. Picture yourselves hand-in-hand, strolling along the dramatic coastline where, according to myth, the goddess of love herself emerged from the sea foam. Take a dip in the crystal-clear waters believed to grant eternal love, or explore the hidden grotto said to be where Aphrodite met her lover, Adonis. This enchanting spot sits on the Akamas Peninsula, at the westernmost tip of Cyprus, offering breathtaking views of the turquoise Aegean Sea and a secluded escape for your romantic rendezvous. Just beware, the allure of this mythical haven might make you believe in fairy tales again! It certainly did for us, being the spot where we got engaged. We visited back in June 2019, with Jenn coming to the UK for our first road trip around Europe . Leon's family happened to be in Cyprus at the same time, so we dropped by before heading out to France. Both of us are fascinated by Greek mythology, so the significance of the location was not lost on us, even if the proposal was completely unplanned! Save for Later 🔗 Aphrodite's Rock & Our Engagement Story 3. Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia Ahh, Malaysia's Langkawi. Imagine a tapestry woven from lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and ancient myths—that's Malaysia , promising romance amidst emerald jungles, where playful monkeys swing through the trees and hidden waterfalls cascade into turquoise pools. The spectacular Dream Forest in Langkawi, one of the island's newest and top attractions Explore a vibrant underwater world in crystal-clear waters, or sail around the majestic Kilim Karst Geopark, marveling at dramatic limestone formations emerging from the sea. Hike through ancient rainforest light shows, search for hidden treasures like the Langkawi Sky Bridge, or soak in the sunset while riding the Langkawi Cable Car. All while enjoying panoramic views that will leave you breathless. Langkawi is an island paradise waiting to be discovered, offering a unique blend of adventure, luxury, and natural beauty to ignite your love story! We spent two weeks in Langkawi in several places across the island, including the incredible Red Coral Cottage, right on one of the epic beaches here, in the north of the island. We were blown away by how quiet it was, strolling on gorgeous white sand beaches without a soul in sight. This is a place of immense peace and tranquillity, where you can take boat tours among the mangroves that are far more personal and connected than the big tourist traps in neighboring Thailand . Aside from just beaches, Langkawi offers plenty of public spaces, boardwalks, and parks too. The perfect blend for the perfect romantic location! Batumi, Republic of Adjara (in Georgia) Most people think of the U.S. state of Georgia when we mention it. Georgia is very much a country of its own and is in one of those spots that is so Eastern Europe it becomes Western Asia . A strategically important city on the Adjara coast, Batumi is easily accessible by plane, with direct flights from major European cities, or by train for a scenic journey through the Caucasus Mountains. Monument of Ilia Chavchavadze, known as the 'Father of the Nation' in Georgia When we talk about escaping the ordinary, Batumi is a city that does that in some very unique ways. European charm meets Eastern vibes on the cobbled streets, giving a flair to the city that can be as romantic as it can be adventurous. Against a backdrop of stunning mountains, the city has a coastline lined by impressive boardwalks, with monuments and gardens to accompany a fantastic beach, even if it is a pebble one. Some of the best sunsets we have ever seen, almost every day here in Batumi. The skies can be gorgeous here, with sunsets to die for. With the beach covered, heading inland is a real treat with quirky architecture like a skyscraper with a built-in Ferris wheel and a tower straddled with the unique letters of the Georgian alphabet. Batumi also boasts a youthful energy, with bustling bars and clubs alongside peaceful public squares and spaces, offering something for every romantic whim. All accompanied by a great variety of restaurants, plenty of bars and wine spots (wine is said to have been invented here), and a rather unusually large number of casinos. Which, by the way, offer free buffet food, beverages, and even smokes to their guests. Have we convinced you yet? More From Batumi 🔗 5 Reasons to Visit Batumi 🔗 10 Awesome Places to See in Batumi 5. San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico San Cristóbal de las Casas, also known by its native Tzotzil name Jovel, is nestled in the Central Highlands region of the Mexican state of Chiapas in Mexico . It sits in a small valley surrounded by hills, offering stunning vistas and a cool mountain climate. This is a town that they say once you venture into, you will not want to leave. Honestly, this is just about as true as anything we ever learned on our travels. Picturesque views in this classic Mexican town of San Cristobal. Simply put, San Cris is where it is at! We spent 3 incredible months here enjoying all it had to offer. The main thoroughfare through the town is the heartbeat of the action, with gorgeous bars and bistros, restaurants and shops, and all the fresh produce you can shake your reusable grocery bag at. In a Spain-esque style, a sleepy and serene street roars into life in the evenings, with street vendors, performers, artists, and musicians springing to action every evening. Couple that with fireworks, epic sunsets, the dry lightning phenomenon, a quirky cool Airbnb , and that very special Mexican cuisine, and San Cristobal will certainly grab your attention. There is so much to see and explore here! We wrote a whole blog about it in the link below, but we will not leave it on that cliffhanger. Let's leave it on the incredible street art. We aren't kidding; the ordinary becomes the extraordinary, and it is first class! If you don't believe us, tap the link below to see more. El Gouna, Hurghada, Egypt El Gouna, also known as the "Venice of the Red Sea," isn't your typical Egyptian experience. This resort town lies along the Red Sea coast in southeastern Egypt , roughly 25 km north of Hurghada. Instead of sprawling, sandy beaches, El Gouna is a network of lagoons and canals, creating a unique "Little Venice" vibe. That being said, it still has epic beaches too! Imagine strolling hand-in-hand along charming walkways beside turquoise waters, exploring colorful marinas lined with incredible yachts, and enjoying romantic gondola rides under the Egyptian sun. Beyond its aquatic charm, El Gouna offers a diverse range of adventures: snorkel amid vibrant coral reefs, kite-surf on crystal-clear waters (which it is world-renowned for), or explore the nearby desert landscapes by ATV or in a hot air balloon. This secluded haven promises a romantic escape unlike any other in Egypt. El-Gouna is a walled city, which means that only residents, workers, and guests are allowed in. The security is quite welcome, making it feel super safe, even if you never actually see the 'walls.' There are spectacular restaurants here, all types of cuisine, along with a vibrant nightlife. Everything about it impressed us; it is modern yet old, traditional yet different, and resort-style, yet it feels like a city. It kind of has to be seen to be believed, although there is one drawback, in that if you want to go to Luxor, you will need a nearly 20-hour day to do it. Still worth it though! Read More 🔗 Day Trip Tour from El Gouna to Luxor 🔗 ATV Across the Desert with Alex Safari 7. Gundogan, Bodrum, Türkiye Gundogan in Türkiye offers a blissful escape on the Aegean coast, approximately 17 km southwest of Bodrum. This hidden gem sits within the larger Milas district, surrounded by rolling hills, olive groves, and picturesque bays. Unlike its bustling neighbor, Bodrum, Gundogan exudes a tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for couples seeking a peaceful and romantic getaway. Having come from a month in Istanbul , the slower pace of Gundogan was very welcome. We came here 2 months before the start of its actual 'season,' which meant we were able to enjoy that very sleepy feel as the town sprang to life with businesses getting ready. Let us explain; this bay of this town is completely lined with resorts, bars, and restaurants, in between some villas. They ceremoniously shut down outside of peak season, laying out all of the reed rush parasols and furniture, clearing the decks, and leaving the foliage to grow. How cool is this palm tree! We walked past it every day on the Gundogan boardwalk. As the season starts to draw near, every day something new starts to appear. Our Airbnb was about halfway up the hill around the bay, and it was awesome to take daily walks down it to the boardwalk for exercise and just because. With no one around, it was seriously beautiful! It amazed us, really, as the temperature was still in the low 20s, which is just about perfect! So, (we digress), as you walk past, it is great to watch the decks being polished, jetties being set up, bushes being cut back, and fresh menu stands making their way onto the path. April to the end of May is the golden spot here. Gundogan has all of the Turkish charm, calls to prayer, markets, and traditional restaurants you could want; it has resorts, water sports, sandy beaches, and adventure tours. Not to mention incredible and vibrant flowers that are beautifully grown in most of the gardens of the whitewashed houses. Which, by the way, is a rule here in Gundogan! It may always lose out to Bodrum in the popularity stakes, but you know what, it is probably better that way. If you catch our drift! Save for Later 🔗 A Guide to Gündoğan, Bodrum's Best-Kept Secret 8. Arundel, West Sussex, England Located on the River Arun in West Sussex, England , lies the historic town of Arundel. This charming haven, about 80 km south of London, boasts a medieval castle towering over quaint cobbled streets lined with independent shops and traditional pubs. Imagine hand-in-hand strolls along the riverbank, breathing in the fresh air and soaking in the picturesque views of the castle reflected in the water. We could not get enough of this view at Arundel Castle. Arundel Castle, dating back to the 11th century, offers a glimpse into England's past. It also happens to boast one of the finest gardens you will likely find, in particular a spectacular rose garden that we will never forget. Beyond the castle walls, you will find the equally spectacular Arundel Cathedral, known for its Gothic architecture and giant circular stained-glass window. The location of Arundel is also pretty neat if you want to tie in other must-see spots, including Stonehenge and the Roman city of Bath. We did this loop on a weekend, and it makes for a really neat road trip. While Arundel may be well known in England, it is not a name that rolls off the tongue amongst foreigners. You think of a castle, you think of Windsor, right? Or the Tower of London? Well, we hope that this clearly-not-enough space to describe this place has done enough to convince you to add this to the list. Whitby, North Yorkshire, England Whitby, set on the North Yorkshire coast where the River Esk meets the North Sea, offers a unique blend of romantic charm, historical intrigue, and natural beauty. This ancient seaside town, roughly 200 miles north of London, is steeped in history. Its East Cliff is dominated by the imposing ruins of Whitby Abbey, a 7th-century monastery famously linked to Bram Stoker's Dracula. Make no mistake, we have been to copious amounts of ruined sites around the world, and this is the ONE to see. The magnificent Whitby Abbey. Even in ruins, it is still imperious! Just the whole experience here is like a whimsical story. From the moment we stepped off the traditional steam train from Pickering—yes, steam train—the town of Whitby was everything we imagined England would have been like back in the day. As a fishing town, there are old nets and crates everywhere, fishing and sailboats in the harbor, old stores with the weather-worn oak beams on the outside, and old stone-built buildings still standing strong after hundreds of years. St Mary's Church Walking towards the sea brings you to 109 steps, which lead to a wonderful old church with one of the most incredible views of any cemetery we have ever come across. The view from up there is one of a kind, even before one gets to the Whitby Abbey ruins themselves, set against a deep blue sky like a painting out of the Louvre. Then package that all together with Dracula and Bram Stoker, fish and chips, old English pubs, sandy beaches, clifftop trails, and the surrounding Yorkshire Moors National Park. At risk of blabbering on like an ad for Whitby, we shall leave it there! Read More 🔗 Whitby Abbey & Dracula's Birthplace 10. Sacre Coeur, Paris, France The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, France , commonly known as Sacré-Coeur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Coeur, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica in Paris dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, at an altitude of 130 meters (427 feet). The views of Paris from here are phenomenal. From this elevated perch, the Sacré-Coeur offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire city of Paris . On a clear day, you can see as far as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. This breathtaking view, combined with the basilica's stunning architecture, makes it a popular tourist destination. Not just for tourists, it also made it a rather beautiful spot for an evening celebrating our engagement, which we made formal in Cyprus the week prior. We were here literally a few days after, and it was a fitting spot. A place that is as alive during the night as it is during the day. As is Paris itself, of course! Not sure what was going on here, but it was a blast! Okay, so we admit, you will probably find Paris in practically every guide you will ever see about romantic destinations. Most likely in the top two or something, too. So sorry, not sorry about that, but here we are. We have no excuses, haha! Seriously, though, we need not mention all of the other Paris stuff: the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Catacombs, Arc de Triomphe, and so on and so on... 11. Isla de Pasion, Cozumel, Mexico Everything about this place fits in with wanderlust and romance. Like a glove! Situated approximately 10 minutes by boat from Cozumel's main shore in Mexico , Isla de Pasion sits on the Caribbean Sea, offering secluded vibes and crystal-clear waters. This private island boasts powdery white sand beaches, fringed by palm trees and lapped by turquoise waters. We had the beach and the docks to ourselves! To get there, you can take an ATV through the main central area of Cozumel, on the only road out of town that goes past the main island resorts before drifting off towards the isolated pier where boats ferry those who find them to the island. Quite literally, you drive off the road onto a dirt path, dodging potholes and overhanging foliage all the way, before parking up in a clearing by a dock that has seen better days. After negotiating with the almost-no-English boat driver on price, we took a three-hour return and went off to enjoy this paradise island that would not look out of place in a Maldives brochure. It is a little bit of a nervous moment waiting for the boat to return—unnecessary, but still. Anyway, we got picked up, albeit a little late, and here we are telling you to do the same thing . Go here. You won't regret it. Find Out More 🔗 Isla de la Pasion: The Secluded Island Paradise 12. Hoi An, Vietnam Hoi An in Vietnam is a captivating town renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage status and its captivating blend of history, culture, and charm. Located approximately 30 kilometers south of Da Nang city and situated beside the picturesque Thu Bon River, Hoi An offers a unique experience that is as romantic as it is cultural and, dare we say it, even spiritual. Stepping into Hoi An's ancient town feels like stepping back in time. Its well-preserved streets, lined with lantern-adorned yellow shophouses dating back to the 15th-19th centuries, exude a magical atmosphere. Its thriving market is the heartbeat of the place, covering most of the riverside streets with just about everything you can think of. The smells were beautiful too; no durian in sight (if you do not know durian fruit, you will when you come to Asia), just warm incense and kind smiles to accompany them. This show happens every night at Hoi An Memories Theme Park. As the sun sets, the transformation in the town gets underway, with more lanterns than you can imagine on just about every tree and every store. This town has been a trading hub for so long, it has blended and frozen cultures from all over Asia . It tells this story in a mesmerizing show called Hoi An Memories, located on an island on the river. Add this experience to gorgeous local cafes and restaurants, friendly locals, and the monthly lantern festival, lighting candles on the river, and you have a place of romance and wanderlust. Period! A shop at Mulberry Silk Village. A big shout-out to the incredible Mulberry Silk Village in Hoi An , where we stayed too. We are yet to write about this incredible experience on our blog, but it will be coming soon! This fabulous hotel includes a silk workshop with traditional techniques and hand-sewn clothing. Not to mention exquisite cuisine and several pools to enjoy and relax in. Save for Later 🔗 Magic in the Moonlight: Hoi An Night Market 13. Singapore Singapore , a sovereign island city-state in Southeast Asia, is a vibrant metropolis known for its futuristic skyline, colonial architecture, and diverse cultural tapestry. Sitting at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore is separated from Malaysia by the Johor Strait and Indonesia by the Singapore Strait. Its compact size, measuring just 728 square kilometers, makes it easily explorable on foot or by its efficient public transportation system. Singapore's unique character stems from its multicultural population, comprising Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian communities. This blend is reflected in its languages, religions, cuisine, and architecture, creating a truly fascinating experience for visitors. The Garden Rhapsody Light and Sound Show. Perhaps most famous for its iconic Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands, this futuristic city has plenty to romanticize about. If you do not know about these two places, you will see them featured just about anywhere Singapore is mentioned. But while this garden paradise, complete with the famous Supertree Grove and Cloud Forest Dome, is great during the day, at night it becomes a free light show beneath the trees and stars. Marina Bay Sands as seen from Gardens by the Bay. Meanwhile, Marina Bay Sands, which affords you a rooftop view with breathtaking views of the bay, becomes a shopping haven thoroughfare to the electric Spectra Light and Water Show, also free at night. Then, of course, there is probably the best Chinatown in all of Southeast Asia, with its epic Hawker Center complete with the world's first hawker Michelin Star, Hawker Chan. Oh, and then there is Little India, local islands to explore, a vibrant nightlife, and everything without the need for a car. Chiang Rai, Thailand Chiang Rai, located in the mountainous northern region of Thailand , is a city brimming with cultural charm, natural beauty, and unique experiences. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai offers a more relaxed and authentic Thai experience, perfect for those seeking to delve deeper into the country's rich heritage and stunning landscapes. The Blue Temple, aka Wat Rong Suea Ten. As with most Thai cities, Chiang Rai is brimming with temples, amongst them some of the most famous in the country itself. The White Temple and the Blue Temple are indeed worthy of that title, which is saying something given there are over 40,000 across the land of smiles. The best part about being here, however, was not so much the inner city but more about the outskirts, where we found a fantastic Airbnb. At the time, we were renting a car and had a permanent stay in Chiang Mai. So we came up to the Rai via the only highway, which happens to be windy and mountainous and very nice, to stay in a 'dome,' overlooking a delightful mountain valley with a bathtub on its balcony. Style Paidoi Resort is one of those that speaks for itself and goes hand in hand with the romance, of course! We will get around to writing about it one day, but for now, you are just going to have to trust us, and in the meantime, check out the sister temples and the very odd and almost concerning Baan Dam Museum below. Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada Last on the list but by no means the least, Niagara Falls is a group of three waterfalls at the southern end of Niagara Gorge, spanning the border between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States. The largest of the three is Horseshoe Falls, which straddles the international border of the two countries. It is also known as the Canadian Falls, and this is the one we visited. Twice, and for Jenn (as a Canadian from Toronto), many more on top of that! If you are looking for a romantic stroll, it doesn't get much better than Niagara Falls at night. Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and for good reason. The falls are truly awe-inspiring, with a total height of 167 feet (51 m) and a width of 3,419 feet (1,043 m). The water flow rate is an average of 6,000 cubic meters per second (212,000 cubic feet per second), although this can vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions. It is a truly spectacular sight to witness, especially from the top of the falls or at night with the mesmerizing fireworks and light show. There are many different ways to experience Niagara Falls, from taking a boat ride to the bottom of the falls to walking behind them. As mentioned earlier, you can also take a boardwalk right up to the top, and you can even take a zip line back down to the bottom during the day or at night. There is so much to do here, including go-karts and 5D theaters. There are a ton of other activities around the falls, too, including amusements, museums, bars, restaurants, and resorts. There is something truly magical about Niagara Falls, and the energy here is powerful. Incredibly, it seems to be avoided on many a list out there, but trust us, it is worth it. And a fitting place to end this not-in-any-particular-order list! All You Need to Know 🔗 Niagara Falls in Canada Zip-lining down the falls at night has to be one of our best experiences! - Safety First: 6 Top Recommendations for Airbnb Guests
Considering an Airbnb for your upcoming getaway could be a wise economic choice. Yet, it's important to note that they may not offer the level of security found in hotels. As such, when arranging your Airbnb accommodations, it's crucial to conduct thorough research and take several precautions before finalizing your reservation. From scrutinizing your host's reputation through past guest reviews to assessing the safety of the local area and inspecting the rental for hidden surveillance devices, this guide outlines vital tips to safeguard your well-being throughout your journey. In This Post... ● Airbnb Safety Tips ● Reviews and Rating - Basics ● Check for Cameras ● Read Airbnb Host Profiles ● Make Sure the Host Is Responsive See More... ● Don't Leave Airbnb to Pay ● Store Your Valuables Safely ● Conclusion ● Lifestyle Resources Airbnb Safety Tips Image source : pexels.com First, I would like to clarify how reliable Airbnb is. When you ask, Is Airbnb safe , what are you comparing it to? If we are talking about property sharing, then Airbnb is much safer. Compared to hotels, the level of security is much lower. We won't delve into Airbnb's security technologies; for that, you can visit the VeePN website. From the article, you can learn about Airbnb safety concerns and options for improving safety. We'll focus on what can be done to improve security when using Airbnb. 1. Reviews and Ratings—Basics When it comes to ensuring safety with Airbnb accommodations, paying attention to guest reviews is paramount. Before making a booking, it's essential to peruse the reviews—doing otherwise is not advisable. After finding a visually and statistically appealing listing, the next step is to dive into individual guest reviews. Reviews are incredibly telling; they're personal accounts of previous guests' experiences. Negative experiences, in particular, tend to prompt guests to share their concerns, offering future guests valuable insights. 2. Check for Cameras You can ask the host directly about the presence of security cameras for complete transparency. Despite the prohibition of concealment devices, conducting a sweep of the accommodations for cameras is a good practice to maintain privacy. Platforms like Airbnb strictly forbid the use of hidden cameras and any recording equipment. Hosts are obligated to inform about any such devices on the premises. Specifically, recording is not allowed in private areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms; however, it may be present in shared spaces. Surveillance devices must not be installed inside rental properties, although exterior cameras are permitted with full disclosure to guests. Nevertheless, there have been incidents reported in the media where travelers found undisclosed cameras in their rented spaces. 3. Read Airbnb Host Profiles To enhance your safety during your stay, it's recommended to thoroughly review the profiles of Airbnb hosts. A well-crafted host profile is often an indicator of a reliable and attentive Airbnb host. A comprehensive profile typically includes a detailed personal description. Hosts who invest time in sharing information about themselves are likely to demonstrate a commitment to providing a positive guest experience. Moreover, pay attention to the verification information a host has submitted to Airbnb. At a basic level, look for confirmed contact details such as a government-issued ID, a verified phone number, and an email address. 4. Make Sure the Host Is Responsive It's critical to select an attentive host for a worry-free experience. Should any problems arise or if you encounter an emergency, you'll appreciate a host who can return your communication promptly, ideally within a day. Imagine being locked out of your accommodation with no timely support—it’s a scenario best avoided. Before booking, sift through the reviews, focusing on the host's communication score. A high rating in this area is reassuring. Initiate a conversation with your potential host ahead of your visit to gauge their responsiveness. If you encounter a lack of responsiveness or unsettling inquiries, consider it a red flag. It's advisable to cancel and seek another place rather than risk a potentially unsafe circumstance upon arrival. 5. Don't Leave Airbnb to Pay Image source : pexels.com Ensuring safety on Airbnb revolves significantly around secure payments within the platform. Wondering what that entails? Let's take a moment to address a common query that I, as an Airbnb host, often encounter. Many guests propose the idea of bypassing the Airbnb platform for direct cash transactions when booking. On the surface, this might appear beneficial. Guests and hosts could potentially save on the service fees charged by Airbnb. For instance, a week's accommodation priced at $2,000 on the platform might be reduced to $1,600 if the service fees are eliminated. That's an enticing saving, right? However, it's essential to reconsider. Operating outside Airbnb's system is not a wise choice. It’s better to already install a VPN on iOS and try to save on housing by changing the region. This way, you will be protected by Airbnb and save money. 6. Store Your Valuables Safely You should check whether their accommodations include a secure safe for storing valuables. Essential items such as passports, electronic devices, and jewelry should be placed in the most secure location available, and some rental properties offer safe storage solutions. In certain cases, it might be necessary to supply your own padlock, which adds a layer of security since only you will have access to the combination. You can use portable safes as an alternative for safeguarding possessions during travel. These safes typically consist of a fabric outer layer integrated with wire mesh and are secured with a braided steel cable, effectively deterring thieves unless they possess bolt cutters. The Pacsafe brand is one of the best in the field for its range of anti-theft products, including portable safes. Conclusion Airbnb accommodations offer an affordable alternative for lodging during travel. Yet, unlike hotels, they may lack standardized security protocols. To ensure a secure and enjoyable stay, it's essential to conduct thorough research before finalizing your Airbnb reservation. Pay close attention to the host's review history, assess the safety of the local area, and be vigilant for the presence of undisclosed surveillance devices within the property. Above, you will find a checklist of crucial considerations that will help safeguard your well-being while you're away from home. - Traveling Full-Time as Digital Nomads: Our Journey & Top Tips
Traveling full-time as a digital nomad has become a popular lifestyle choice for many individuals in recent years. With advancements in technology and the rise of remote work opportunities, it has become easier than ever to work from anywhere in the world. This has opened up a world of possibilities for those seeking adventure, freedom, and flexibility in their lives. Let's take a look at some of the good and the not-so-good of living the digital nomad lifestyle. In This Post... ● Good Internet is a Must ● Freedom! ● New Cultures & Experiences ● Loneliness and Isolation ● A Final Note ● Lifestyle Resources A good Internet Connection is a Must Being a digital nomad means that you can work from anywhere with an internet connection. This could be a coffee shop in Paris, a beach in Thailand , or a co-working space in Bali . It’s all about finding the perfect balance between work and travel, allowing you to explore the world while maintaining a successful career. Freedom! One of the biggest benefits of being a digital nomad is the freedom it provides. You are not tied down to a specific location or office, and you have the ability to work on your own schedule. This allows you to prioritize your travel goals and create a lifestyle that suits you. Whether you want to work in the morning and explore in the afternoon, or vice versa, you have the flexibility to do so. New Cultures and Experiences on the Daily Another benefit is the ability to immerse yourself in new cultures and experiences. When you travel full-time, you have the opportunity to experience new ways of life and expand your horizons. You can try new foods, learn new languages, and meet people from all over the world. This can be incredibly enriching and can broaden your perspective on life. However, there are also some challenges to being a digital nomad. One of the biggest is maintaining a work-life balance. When you are constantly on the move, it can be difficult to find a routine and set boundaries for your work time. It’s important to prioritize your workload and make time for self-care and relaxation. Amidst these adventures and challenges, securing reliable nomad insurance becomes crucial for peace of mind and safety on your journeys. Loneliness and Isolation (If Traveling Solo) Another challenge is the potential for loneliness and isolation. While traveling can be exciting and adventurous, it can also be lonely at times. It can be difficult to form meaningful connections with people when you are constantly on the move. However, there are ways to combat this, such as joining co-working spaces, attending events and meetups, and staying in touch with friends and family back home. A Final Note... Overall, traveling full-time as a digital nomad can be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience. It allows you to explore the world, learn new things, and create a lifestyle that suits you. However, it’s important to be aware of the challenges and make an effort to find a balance between work and play. If you are considering becoming a digital nomad, do your research and prepare yourself for the journey ahead. Lifestyle Resources
- Full-Time Travel: 5 Essential Things to Know Before You Hit the Road
The decision to embark on the life-changing journey to explore and travel the world full-time is a big one... While we can list thousands of reasons why you should do so, we feel that it's important to also highlight the lesser-talked-about and more challenging aspects of this lifestyle choice , to help you be better equipped. These are our 5 top things to remember before you travel full-time... If you have any other suggestions, please drop them in the comments below! In This Post... 1. Full-Time Travel IS a Job 2. Relationships and Connections 3. Funding Your Travels 4. Letting go of Creature Comforts 5. Travel Alone or With Someone? ● FAQ: Full-Time Travel ● Lifestyle Resources 1. Full-Time Travel IS a Job The colorful umbrellas at Balat Cafe in Istanbul So much goes into planning travels, especially if you are operating on a budget. So much research goes into finding adequate accommodations, places to stay, how to use the transportation systems, what neighborhood is ideal for you to stay in, and whether it meets your monthly budget. Travel by air or train requires using different systems in different languages. Visa costs and length of stay. Finding excursions and affordable food and restaurant costs. Changing costs of living are dependent upon the country. Learning about the cultural customs of the country you are visiting. And… then we do it all again the next month! 2. The Relationships & Connections You Lose May Surprise You (However, There Are More to Gain!) Be wise with your money. Many people will not understand your need or choice to travel the world. You may be surprised by the people you lose as you travel, but remember people can’t help but operate from a self-perspective. If they couldn’t imagine it or think it’s risky or selfish, that is about them, not you. People will miss you and what you bring to their lives. People may say that they will keep in touch, but you may see the video calls become further apart. Time zone differences, busy schedules, and the like can impact things. When you do return home after years or months of travel, you may feel that you no longer fit in, or better yet, that you no longer want to. 3. Make Sure You Can Fund Your Travels NOW Missing our creature comforts of home Social media will lead you to believe that it’s as simple as selling your belongings and hitting the road! With a few steps of setting up a blog, filming a YouTube video , and creating a drop shipping company, you can fund your travels. While these are great options and possibilities, like most things, it takes time and dedication towards things for them to grow and prosper. We suggest that you have a solid financial plan that is stable before considering full-time travel… While we fully believe in leaping first and that the universe must respond, we still think practicality is a good complement to this! 4. Can You Let Go of Your Creature Comforts? Jennifer David: A Broad Perspective This one, we think most people assume they can do no problem and then get surprised by the ebbs and flows of how this comes into play when traveling full-time. Living out of one suitcase (full seasonal wardrobes) is quite the challenge. Especially if you plan to film videos and take many photos … You’ll be wearing much of the same clothing throughout (unless you plan to shop and change often, which is a possibility, but also another expense to keep in mind). It’s really difficult to get things shipped or delivered when you are moving frequently. Many countries' postal systems are not up to par, so it can be very difficult to receive care packages or even online shopping. Snacks and foods you love from home will be missed. Trust us when we say Doritos DO NOT taste the same throughout the world, nor do most of the major fast food chains that you were hoping to have a bite at for a small taste of home. 5. Can You Be Alone or Full-Time Together With Your Travel Person? Spending a lot of time alone or with another person while traveling can easily lead to depression and anxiety, both from loneliness and co-dependency. When traveling solo, you need to remember that you may not speak the language, so communication and friendships can become very difficult. If you fall ill, you won’t have a support system with you. When traveling with a partner, you spend 24/7 together during high-stress times, and it’s not always easy to remain amicable when you are exhausted from travel or trying to overcome an obstacle or language barrier. It’s important to be very mindful of your mental health. Adequate sleep, diet, exercise, and listening to your body are very important. These points are not meant to discourage you from traveling. We believe it is of high importance and value to see as much of the world as possible in whatever way possible! However, like most things in life, there are good and bad sides to everything. Be Bold. Be Brave. Do the thing… (with wisdom) Follow along on our journey on YouTube. Have you been considering leaving it all behind to travel full-time? Let us know in the comments! FAQ: Full-Time Travel—What You Should Know Before Going All In Do I need to save a lot of money before starting full-time travel? Having savings helps, but you don’t need to be rich. Many full-time travelers start with a modest cushion and fund their journey through remote work, freelancing, house sitting, teaching English, or seasonal jobs. Planning and flexibility are key. Is it lonely being on the road all the time? It can be at times, but you’ll also meet people constantly, especially if you stay in hostels, join tours, or connect with online travel communities. The key is balancing solo time with social time and finding places where you feel a sense of belonging. How do you deal with healthcare and travel insurance? Long-term travelers usually buy global health or travel insurance like SafetyWing or World Nomads. Some countries also offer short-term local insurance for digital nomads or expats. It’s important to research coverage by region, especially for high-risk destinations or activities. What’s the biggest challenge of full-time travel? It’s not always picture-perfect. The biggest challenges are visa logistics, burnout, income stream maintenance, and finding stable Wi-Fi. You’ll also need to let go of routines and be open to frequent change. How do you pick where to go next? It depends on your budget, visa access, weather preferences, and personal interests. Many travelers follow a mix of slow travel (spending weeks/months in one place) and spontaneous side trips. Flexibility is one of full-time travel’s biggest perks. Lifestyle Resources

- Will Grey Hair Age You? The Honest Truth About Going Grey
There’s a sentence I heard for years—sometimes whispered, sometimes shouted: “But grey hair will age you.” As if that’s the worst thing that could happen to a woman. But let’s be real: I used to believe it, too. Before I decided to ditch the dye , that fear ran deep. I was always told I looked “so young for my age,” but was it just with dyed hair? Compliments like that can feel like currency for us women, especially in a culture that’s becoming more and more obsessed with youth. But when I met Leon, who is 12 years younger than I, the fear got a little louder. Not that I’m new to the age difference thing; my ex-husband was 10 years younger than me as well. But as I have gotten older, I’ve been more concerned about those years becoming more noticeable . 18 months into my natural grey hair grow-out journey with Leon in Hua Hin, Thailand, September 2024 I worried about how I would look beside him. Would I seem “too old” to be with him? Would people judge me? Would HE stop seeing me the same way if I let my grey hair shine through? Would he still be attracted to me? Spoiler alert: he didn’t flinch. In fact, his support helped me find the courage to do what my soul was already calling me to do. Embrace my authenticity. Leon and I on the Princess Regal during a transatlantic cruise in April 2025, celebrating 6 years together, 4 years travelling full time (44 countries together!), and 2 years into my natural grey hair grow-out journey, all during this month! Facing the Fear: Grey Hair and the “Invisible Woman” Myth Let’s talk about what’s really going on. The fear of grey hair isn’t just about color . It’s about our visibility. Our value, position, and perceived identity in society. So much of our conditioning tells us that as we age, especially as women, we fade. That we lose desirability. That our beauty has an expiration date , and it’s somewhere around the first sign of silver hair, which is silly in itself because many women first notice a grey hair far under the age of 30 ; we just don’t realize it because so many women choose to hide their greys from first sight! But here’s what I’ve learned: Youthful energy isn’t something that you color in—it’s something you own. It’s in your fire , your freedom , your presence . NOT your pigment. 1 year into my natural silver hair grow-out journey, March 2024, in England I’m now two years into my grow-out journey, and yes—people do comment less often that I “ look so young for my age .” And yes, I AM actually two years older now than when I first started this journey—there are shifts that naturally start to happen, especially around 48 to 50. But the biggest shift isn’t my appearance—it’s the societal association that grey = old; therefore, I no longer look ‘young for my age,’ and old = less. We can never truly look older or younger than our age because our age is what it is. It cannot be changed. Therefore, this is what I look like at 50 . Not older. Not younger, but MY 50. This is 50 ON ME. This is the narrative I’m passionate about dismantling. And friend, there’s so much work to be done . The Liberation of Living Unfiltered! Since ditching the dye, something incredible has happened . I feel more radiant . More confident. More authentic. More me. Not because grey hair magically fixed anything, because there was nothing to be ‘fixed,’ but because choosing authenticity over approval set something free in me. I stopped trying to fit into the outdated mold of what a woman “should” look like, especially the ‘for her age’ narrative, and started showing up in my full , authentic design . And here’s the beautiful twist: When you live authentically and unfiltered , your real energy starts shining. 2 years into my natural gray hair grow-out transition, and I couldn't feel more confident! Not despite your age, but BECAUSE of your lived experience, your presence, your power, and walking and owning that fully. If You’re Wondering, “Will Grey Hair Make Me Less…?” To the woman asking, “Will gray hair make me less beautiful?” “Will it make me less dateable?” “Will I lose something if I let go of dye?” 6 months into my grow-out, about to make my YouTube debut with THIS hair for the first time. I was still feeling very insecure about what OTHER PEOPLE might think about my grey hair. I see you. I was you. And my answer is this: Grey hair will not make you less . It will simply make you more. More magnetic. More rooted in self (see what I did there, ha!) More free. This isn’t about going grey to prove a point, but it sure can be! The more women who embrace their natural grey hair, the faster and more normalized it will become for future women in society, and that’s a brilliant reason to say bye to hair dye! It’s about choosing your truth over fear. So, if you’re standing in front of the mirror, wondering if it’s time— The wonder is your sign. Curiosity is your sign. This is your sign. Your beauty and evolving self don’t need permission, but sometimes it's nice to receive it. So here you go. Permission to let go of societal pressures and let it GROW! And you know, your bright, sparkly silver light most certainly DOES NOT need a filter (aka hair dye). Let THEM see YOU . Let YOU see YOU .
