Instagram Asked for a Video Selfie? Here’s What It Means

Instagram Support Series Part 12 infographic explaining legitimate Instagram video selfie identity verification, privacy protections and warning signs of fake account recovery requests.

Being asked to record a video selfie during Instagram account recovery can feel a little alarming, especially when you're already worried about losing your account.

But a video-selfie check can be a legitimate part of Instagram's official recovery process.

Meta uses video-selfie verification in some account-recovery situations to help establish that the person trying to regain access is the genuine account owner. Meta says the technology can compare the submitted selfie with profile pictures on the account.

Importantly, not everyone will be offered the same verification method. Meta's newer recovery system is designed to adapt to the individual account and situation, so somebody else seeing a video-selfie option doesn't mean you should necessarily see one too.

🔐 What about your privacy?

Meta says a recovery video selfie is encrypted and isn't displayed on your Instagram profile or shown to other users. It also says facial data generated for the comparison is deleted after the comparison is completed.

⚠️ But there's an important distinction

A legitimate Instagram verification request appearing inside the official recovery process is very different from a stranger contacting you and asking you to send them:

❌ A selfie or video

❌ Your password

❌ A 2FA/security code

❌ Identification documents

❌ Money to "verify" or recover your account

Don't send sensitive recovery information to somebody claiming they have a contact at Meta.

If Instagram offers identity verification, follow the instructions presented through Instagram's official recovery process rather than instructions sent by an unknown person.

Has Instagram ever asked you to complete a video-selfie verification?

🎥 Yes, and it worked

⏳ Yes, but I'm still waiting

❌ No, I've never been offered it

❓ I didn't know this existed

If you've experienced it, tell us what happened. Just don't share the actual verification video, ID, codes or other private information.
